Surveillance and undercover investigation The difference between surveillance and undercover investigation lies in purpose, objectives, and functions of the investigator. The purpose of surveillance is to follow the subject or watch an area and collect observations on behavior and activities. the purpose of an undercover investigation i not only to observe but also to make subjects react to certain behaviors or activities, or interact with an investigator or other subjects in specific way. The objective of surveillance is to collect evidence, while the objective of an undercover investigation is to expose and possibly detain the suspect. The functions of the investigator in surveillance require him or her to stay concealed while performing the operation. The functions of the investigator in  an undercover investigation require his or her exposure while playing a role. Counter surveillance operations and equipment The following are some of the most common counter surveillance operations and equipment:

– Sweep – an inspection of a place, such as a room or a building, for the presence of bugging devices. – Bug detector – an electronic device that  produces an audio ton that picks up any electronic transmission and pinpoints the exact location of bugs.

– Phone tap detection device – an electronic device that indicates the presence of wiretap in the phone.

– Camera detection device – works similar to bug detector indicating the presence  of concealed video cameras.

– Scrambler – an electronic device attached to a telephone that  makes the speaker’s voice appear distorted to every listener except the one who has a similar device coded to receive the normal voice.

– White noise blocker – a device that acts like an electromagnetic megaphone attempting to drown out the user’s desired signal.
