How Long Does a Background Check Take? (2026 Timing Guide)
A straight-answer timeline for every background-check type — criminal, employment, tenant, FBI, and more — plus what actually causes delays.

Short Answer In our firm's experience across cases we've actually closed over the last 12 months, a straightforward background check from us runs 5 to 10 business days from signed retainer to delivered report. The investigative work itself is rarely the bottleneck. The actual delays come from three predictable places — in every single case we've handled: External record-holders (court clerks, registrars, prior employers) Payment processing and signed-engagement return Gaps in the subject information the client provides at intake Below is the real pattern — drawn from BSI's actual casework. Not industry averages. Not aggregator estimates. --- How to Hire BSI for a Background Check Two paths. Both start with a free consultation. Both end at the same place: a signed engagement, a flat-rate quote with nothing hidden, and work started the moment the retainer clears. Path 1 — Call us first, then submit the form You call us at (714) 592-8000 and we talk through what you're trying to accomplish. If the matter is a fit for a background check, we'll point you to our Background Check Request Form and walk you through what to include so we have what we need to scope the work. Call is free. No obligation. --- Path 2 — Submit the form first, we call you back You go straight to our Background Check Request Form , fill in what you know, and submit. We review the submission, map out what we can realistically deliver against what you've given us, and call you back to discuss. Same free consultation. No obligation. --- What happens next (both paths) Once we've reviewed your submission and had the consultation call: We quote a flat rate covering the full scope of work. Everything is upfront. We will not bill you anything above what you agreed to at retainer. You sign the Private Investigator Engagement Agreement. It outlines every service we will render and the accurate timeline you should expect. You pay the retainer. The moment it clears, we start work. No hourly surprises. No scope creep. No "while we were in there we also found..." add-ons unless you authorize them in writing first. --- What We Promise at Intake Single-subject identity + employment verification 5 to 10 business days from the day the retainer clears. That's not aspirational. That's the window we've been able to hold in cases we've closed, and it's what we quote verbally and in writing. If you want a deeper look at what's actually inside a BSI background check, see our breakdown of how background checks work step by step and the main types of background checks . --- Dual-subject verification (two individuals) Same 5 to 10 business days. We don't double the clock just because the subject count doubles — the record pulls run in parallel. --- Comprehensive education verification (CA public university) 4 weeks retainer-to-delivery is the pattern we've seen in cases involving term-by-term enrollment records and degree confirmation. The long pole in those cases is the university registrar's response time, not our workflow. --- Judgment-creditor asset search 4 to 8 weeks , depending on how many jurisdictions the subject has lived in and how deep the lien search needs to go. See our judgment collection services page for the full asset-search scope. --- Pre-marriage / matrimonial background check 7 to 14 business days for a thorough background on a future spouse — civil litigation, prior marriages, lifestyle, asset ownership. See our matrimonial background check page for scope detail. --- The Three Real Delays — From Our Case Log 1. Retainer processing Our single most common delay has been payment authorization — not investigative work. Specifically: Foreign-issued credit cards that fail on first attempt require a re-run with updated authorization. We've had cases pushed out by nearly a month on this alone before investigative work could legally start. Overseas clients working on different time zones (Korea, UAE, Western Europe) sometimes take 48 to 72 hours just to confirm the engagement by email after the quote is sent. Signed engagement agreements returning from international entities add 1 to 2 days of email round-trip beyond a domestic client. None of these are investigative delays. The record pulls, the OSINT work, the courthouse visits — those happen on BSI's clock. The gap is between "we got the quote" and "we have cleared payment and a signed engagement." --- 2. External record-holder response times Once we start work, our actual investigative turnaround is fast. Most automated database searches, phone traces, address history pulls, and OSINT work close within 48 to 72 hours. What stretches a case into week two or beyond: University registrars. On a formal verification request, 7 to 14 business days to return a signed, term-by-term enrollment record. There is nothing a PI can do to speed that up — the registrar runs on their own queue. County courts that are not fully digitized. In Los Angeles County, record pulls are usually 48 hours. In rural California and much of the South, 5 to 10 business days per request. One case may require multiple county pulls. Prior-employer HR departments. Some respond within a day, some take a week, and a nontrivial percentage don't respond at all until escalated. We escalate at 72 hours by default. FBI Identity History Summary (fingerprint-based criminal). Current stated turnaround is 3 to 5 business days from the date the FBI receives the prints. We've seen 7 to 14 days in practice when print quality requires resubmission. For the LA-specific view, see our guide to Los Angeles County background checks . --- 3. Incomplete intake information The third common delay comes from the subject's identifying information being incomplete at intake. If the client doesn't have the subject's SSN, exact DOB, or prior addresses, we have to either: Request them from the client (which can add days of back-and-forth) Run broader-match searches that return more candidate hits — each one requiring manual verification against identifying details In cases where the client provided a complete profile at intake (full legal name, DOB, SSN or last-4, two prior addresses), we've closed inside the 5-to-10-day window every time. In cases where the client provided just a name + phone number, the case stretched to 15 to 20 business days. --- What We Don't Do No "same-day background checks." A credit-only pull or a phone-trace-only is possible same-day. A comprehensive background check from BSI is 5 to 10 business days minimum from signed retainer. No aggregator-only data. We corroborate every finding against primary-source records (court, registrar, employer, SSN trace) before it goes in a signed report. Aggregator "instant background check" services return data in seconds, but the data is cached and often months stale. No hourly billing. Every background-check engagement with us is a flat-rate quote at intake. You know the number before we start. No surprise charges. We will not bill you anything above what you agreed to at retainer. If scope changes mid-case, we tell you first and you authorize in writing. For a regional perspective on scope and pricing norms, see our Orange County background checks guide . --- The Honest FAQs How long does a background check actually take at BSI? 5 to 10 business days from signed retainer to delivered report for standard identity + employment verification on one or two subjects. 4 weeks for comprehensive education verification. 4 to 8 weeks for judgment-creditor asset searches. --- What's the fastest you've ever turned one around? If the subject has common identifiers (SSN, full DOB, California-only address history) and the retainer clears same-day, our fastest closed case was 3 business days. That's the floor, not the typical. --- Why would my background check take longer than 10 business days? Three reasons in order of frequency: Payment or signed-engagement delays on the client side External record-holders (registrar, courthouse, prior employer) running their own queues Incomplete subject information at intake, requiring broader searches --- Can you do same-day? No, not for a comprehensive report. We can run credit-only or address-trace-only same-day for narrow scope. For anything we'd put our California PI license number on, 5 business days is the floor. --- Do you work with foreign-issued credit cards? Yes, but expect a 1 to 2 day payment-processing delay on first attempt. Our standard practice is to try the charge once; if it fails, we route to a re-run with updated CVV and billing confirmation — adds 2 to 5 days to the overall timeline. --- What happens if the subject's prior employer doesn't respond? We escalate at 72 hours. If 7 business days pass without response, we document the attempted verification in the final report as "unable to verify via employer" and move forward on the remaining scope. --- Who We Are Blue Systems International is a California-licensed private investigation agency — CA Private Investigator License No. 28286 — headquartered in Santa Ana with offices across Orange County and Los Angeles County.
