Internet Dating Scams
WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU ARE BEING SCAMMED ?
MJ PI specialize in internet dating fraud investigations
- Trust your intuition. If something doesn’t seem right, or his/her story does not “add up,” something is probably wrong. It could be a scam.
- Take a breath, step back, and try to look at things objectively. This will be difficult, because by now he/she has you “hooked” emotionally and invested in the success of the relationship. Consider the following things:
a. Has he/she asked you to send them money? This is NOT something that someone does, especially if you haven’t met in person, unless it is a scam.
b. Has he/she given many excuses why he/she cannot web cam (this enables you to see them “live” on camera while you are chatting on an instant messenger such as Yahoo messenger) ? Scammers/frauds/cons have very good excuses ready that seem believable to you at the time, including “I have to buy more minutes for internet time,” especially if they claim to be in another country at this time. Other excuses include “I can’t get my web cam to work” or “My computer is having problems with that right now.” The same applies to Face-time on a smart phone. Often, the excuse there is “I don’t have a smart phone, I have a global phone and I can’t facetime on it.”
c. He/she can only talk/text/chat at certain hours of the day or night, indicating that he/she may be “working around” their real life which may include a spouse and children.
d. He/she uses diversion tactics during conversation when you ask probing questions. For example, perhaps you text to complain or express concern that you did not hear from him/her at all yesterday. Their reply might look something like “I know baby, I was tied up at work in meetings all day. I missed you so much, I just want to be with you. Do you miss me? What are your plans today honey?”
e. Does he/she claim they are self employed or an independent contractor? Ask for the name of their company and do a google search in the city they supposedly live in in the United States. Anyone who owns their own business these days has a website and want to make it easy for you to find them. The success of their business depends on being found on the internet. They WANT to be found online.
3. Do your own research online regarding scams. Just google “online dating scams” or “online scams.” There is an abundance of information available to you.
4. Hire a private investigator to check out your suspicions. It is well worth the money to know if you are involved in a scam.
