One way to reduce the chance that domestic violence continues to play a role in someone’s life is to understand some of the warning signs and red flags associated with abusive behavior. By understanding these signs, individuals may be able to get out of a relationship before serious issues occur, or family members and friends may be able to reach out to loved ones in a bad situation.Every domestic violence case is different, which does make it difficult to know when and how a relationship can turn abusive.
However, there are some warning signs that commonly occur prior to abuse in many cases. Most of the signs have to do with someone exerting control over the relationship, other person or situation to an excessive degree; these are warning signs of possible domestic violence because abuse is often about control. Some possible warning signs include when one person in the relationship controls all the money or schedule, to a point that the other person is treated in a distrustful or childlike manner.
Refusing to provide money for expenses or taking money away from another person could be a warning sign, as is following or constantly calling the other person when he or she is away to check on or find out where the person is.Verbal cues can also provide warnings or signs of abuse, and can be abuse themselves. If one person is always putting the other person down, saying that she or he is stupid or can’t do anything correctly, it could be a sign of abuse and red flag for possible domestic violence.Since all cases are different, individuals should educate themselves about domestic violence and seek outside assistance for possible abuse. Outside assistance exists in the form of counseling, shelters and legal help.Source: The National Domestic Abuse Hotline, “Warning Signs and Red Flags”
